This special half-day tour transforms our Rack and Gorge and River and Rainforest tours into a winter Christmas celebration. Tasmania’s west coast has a beauty all its own in winter, so rug up and board your steam train in Strahan to enjoy cosy carriages, mulled wine, mince pies, and gifts for the children.

The Christmas in July tour operates on all services throughout the month. During your four-hour journey, you’ll see the dramatic wilderness landscapes of the west coast from the warmth and comfort of your festive Wilderness carriage. Your experience includes piping hot mulled wine, a Christmas-themed morning tea, light lunch and steaming tea and coffee throughout your journey.

Highlights

Board the train in Strahan and settle into your festive, warm Wilderness Carriage for your Christmas-themed River and Rainforest tour.

  • Enjoy delicious, hot mulled wine, a Christmas-themed morning tea, light lunch and steaming tea and coffee throughout your journey.
  • Take in the views of Macquarie Harbour as you travel along the foreshore from Regatta Point Station.
  • Journey deep into western Tasmania’s cool temperate rainforest.
  • Travel alongside the King River to Teepookana, once the fourth busiest port in Tasmania.
  • Cross historic bridges, including Iron Bridge, and see the remains of the 244-metre trestle bridge at Quarter Mile.
  • Taste wild Tasmanian leatherwood honey, harvested from the forests at Lower Landing.
  • Watch the locomotive being turned at Dubbil Barril and take a short walk in the rainforest.

Toilet facilities are available at all stations along the way. The longest period between stations is approximately 30 minutes. All station platforms and toilets are wheelchair accessible.

Yes, we can cater for vegetarians, vegans and other requirements, but please let us know your needs when you book so we can look after you.

Our tours do regularly fill up so advance bookings are strongly recommended.

Is there always a steam engine on the tour?
A

Usually. On the rare occasions that our steam locomotives are not operable, heritage diesel locomotives will be used instead.

Do tours run on Public Holidays?
A

The West Coast Wilderness Railway is closed on Christmas Day and the Queen’s Birthday public holiday, but operates on other holidays.
