This special half-day tour transforms our Rack and Gorge and River and Rainforest tours into a winter Christmas celebration. Tasmania’s west coast has a beauty all its own in winter, so rug up and board your steam train in Queenstown or Strahan to enjoy cosy carriages, mulled wine, mince pies, and gifts for the children.

The Christmas in July tour operates on all services throughout the month. During your four-hour journey, you’ll see the dramatic wilderness landscapes of the west coast from the warmth and comfort of your festive Wilderness carriage. Your experience includes piping hot mulled wine, a Christmas-themed morning tea, light lunch and steaming tea and coffee throughout your journey.

Highlights

Board your cosy, festively decorated Wilderness Carriage in Queenstown for a Christmas-themed Rack and Gorge tour.

  • Enjoy delicious, hot mulled wine, a Christmas-themed morning tea, light lunch and steaming tea and coffee throughout your journey.
  • Travel deep into western Tasmania’s cool temperate rainforest.
  • Pan for gold at Lynchford Station.
  • Climb the steep mountainside at Rinadeena Saddle, under the power of the Abt rack and pinion system.
  • Enjoy stunning views as you descend the spectacular King River Gorge.
  • Watch the locomotive being turned at Dubbil Barril and take a short walk in the rainforest.

Toilet facilities are available at all stations along the way. The longest period between stations is approximately 30 minutes. All station platforms and toilets are wheelchair accessible.

Usually. On the rare occasions that our steam locomotives are not operable, heritage diesel locomotives will be used instead.

The West Coast Wilderness Railway is closed on Christmas Day and the Queen’s Birthday public holiday, but operates on other holidays.
